In 2004, Cyntoia Brown was a 16-year-old sentenced to life in prison. Everyone rallied for answers to why a victim of sex trafficking should spend the rest of her life behind bars. #FreeCyntoia wasn’t just a trend… it became a social media firestorm, it was mentioned over 30,000 times on Instagram alone. The court said it was murder but the public felt differently.
However, Brown still served time. In fact, she served 15 years in a Tennessee prison. She spoke with Tamron Hall about what life has been like after she was granted clemency and released from prison in the summer of 2019.
While in prison, Brown met her husband. The two told Hall how they met:
